Delegates, especially those from central Canada, were greeted with some welcome sunny skies as they arrived in Quebec City for the Agriculture Union’s 14th Triennial National Convention.

Much of the day prior to the official opening of Convention was taken up with the registration of delegates. As the photos below indicate, there was a steady flow of business for the National Office staff both Tuesday afternoon and evening, and on Wednesday morning.
Delegates had the opportunity Tuesday evening to mingle and ‘talk shop’ at a wine and cheese reception sponsored by the Host Committee. Several photos of groups of delegates can be seen below.
Those attending the reception were also treated to tongue-in-cheek portrayals of Quebec’s colourful history by members of the provincial capital’s artistic community. The photo at the left, directly below, shows a mock dual between the two French explorers who vie for the title of founder of New France: Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain.
To the right, above, Jean Talon, presents two ‘Filles du roi’ – young women literally shipped from the ‘old world’ to be married off to the overwhelmingly male settlers of New France. In addition to his matchmaking responsibilities, Talon was the colony’s first Intendant of Justice, Police, and Finance, tasked with stimulating the economic expansion of New France and bringing order to its financial administration.
