The first day of our 14th Triennial National Convention began with a burst of activity that continued until adjournment late in the afternoon. The Credentials Committee reported 136 delegates and some 40 observers and guests in attendance. Photos of just some of the delegates to speak to the day's resolutions and issues are shown throughout this update.
Following the official call to order, delegates were welcomed to Quebec City by Host Committee Chairperson André Grégoire (above, left). Michel Arseneault, President of the Quebec Federation of Labour, delivered an extremely well-received speech outlining the need to press ahead on labour code improvements across the country. At right, above, National President Yves Ducharme presents Arseneault (at left) with a gift on behalf of Agriculture Union members.
Delegates heard from three of the four Convention Resolution Committees throughout the day. First up was the Finance Resolutions Committee, seen in the first photo above. After vigorous but civil debate, a new three-year budget was adopted. The second photo above shows the moment delegates overwhelmingly voted to adopt the budget.
The two photos below show the By-Laws and Education Resolutions Committee in session, and the Collective Bargaining and Health and Safety Resolutions Committee in discussion. All three Convention Committees will return on day two of the convention to address more resolutions submitted by our Locals.
